Home / Thank you, Ms. Silver-Betts for bringing musical programs to Kennard

Our musical teacher, Annette Silver-Betts has coordinated several recent musical performances for our students. Jazz St. Louis and Opera Theater St. Louis brought programs to our school, and Ms. Silver-Betts arranged field trips for students to see performances at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Thank you also to Jazz St. Louis, Opera Theater St. Louis, and Kaye Harrelson, SLPS Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist, for providing these outstanding programs for our students.

Last year Ms. Silver-Betts was named the SLPS Elementary Performing Arts Teacher of the Year and was featured in this video that celebrates her work.

Jazz St. Louis

As a part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz for Young People: The Resilient Cities Tour, Jazz St. Louis will provide three performances for 4th and 5th graders at Kennard during the 2016-2017 school year:
“Jazz and Democracy”
“Jazz and the Great Migration”
“Jazz and the Civil Rights Era”

Each performance comes with a curriculum guide and preparatory lessons. The same musicians will visit Kennard for each of the three performances. The group will be made up of local musicians led by a musician sent from Jazz at Lincoln Center. The 1st concert is scheduled for November 14, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. Special thanks to Andy Ament, Education Manager, Jazz St. Louis; Kaye Harrelson, SLPS Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist; and Annette Silver-Betts, Music Teacher.

Opera Theater St. Louis

Opera Theater St. Louis performed Pirates of Penzance-Opera on the Go for students in grades 2-5 on October 26 in Kennard’s gym. This interactive performance was tailored for young people with sound sensitivities. Students participated in fun and engaging workshops on Movement and Stage Make-Up, both with audience participation. The event ended with an abbreviated performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera “The Pirates of Penzance.”
