Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of our Kennard CJA Community! At one point or another in your child’s time at Kennard, it is likely you will want to participate in an activity that requires you to be an approved volunteer. You must be an approved volunteer to:

  • Chaperone a field trip
  • Be a room parent
  • Help with a classroom celebration or activity
  • Read a book to your child’s class
  • Help at a PTO event like movie night or the dance
  • Talk to the class about your career
  • Participate in 5th grade events – Springfield, Camp Wyman

Volunteering at Kennard is also a wonderful way to get to know your child’s friends, teachers, administration, and other parents. Becoming an approved volunteer will allow you to help in the way that works best for your schedule. Regardless of skill level or availability, if you would like to be involved, we have a place for you! We highly recommend all parents become an approved volunteer!

Step One: SLPS Volunteer Approval Process

For the safety of our children, all volunteers must be approved before helping at Kennard. The approval process includes standard paperwork and a background check, which is paid for by SLPS. Volunteers must renew applications every two years.

The volunteer process, along with all necessary forms, is outlined below. Instructions and forms related to the volunteer approval process can also be found on the SLPS website: http://www.slps.org/Page/24445.

Become a NEW Approved Volunteer

If you have never volunteered for SLPS before, please complete the following:

  1. SLPS Adult Volunteer Application
  2. SLPS Criminal, Neglect and Abuse Check Form
  3. SLPS Character Reference Form

All forms can also be found at http://www.slps.org/Page/24445

To ensure your application is processed promptly, SLPS requests you submit ALL your paperwork at the same time – application, background check, and references. Applications that are missing any of the required forms will not be processed. Mail the paperwork to the address listed on the form, or drop it off directly to the school’s administrative assistant, Mrs. Shivers-Jones. If she is not there, put your application in Mrs. Shivers-Jones’ mailbox.

Allow 4 weeks for your application to be processed. If you have not received confirmation after that time, contact the school’s administrative assistant, Mrs. Shivers-Jones (phone: 314-353-8875), to inquire about your status.

Renew Your Volunteer Status

Every volunteer needs to renew their application every two years. It is highly recommended to renew your volunteer application 6 weeks before it is due to expire. To renew your volunteer status, complete the following:

  1. SLPS Adult Renewal Application
  2. SLPS Criminal, Neglect and Abuse Check Form

All forms can also be found at http://www.slps.org/Page/24445

Check Your Volunteer Status

Not sure if you’re an approved volunteer? Need to check your volunteer status?

If you were previously an approved volunteer, contact your child’s teacher to find out the expiration date of your status.

If you recently applied to become an approved volunteer, allow 4 weeks for your application to be processed. If you have not received confirmation after that time, contact the school’s administrative assistant, Mrs. Shivers-Jones (phone: 314-353-8875), to inquire about your status.

If the above time frame has passed and your name is not on the school’s approved volunteer list, contact the SLPS Volunteer Services Specialist, Ella Hungerford at 314-345-4577 or Eleanor.hungerford@slps.org for additional information.

Step Two: Sign Up for Volunteer Opportunities at Kennard

The Kennard PTO puts on wonderful events throughout the year and help is always needed! See the complete list of committees here. Please contact Melissa Von Rohr at Volunteer.KCJA@gmail.com if you would like to sign up for a committee or to ask a question.

Step Three: Sign Up for Specific Dates/Times

The committee or event chair will contact you via email closer to the date of the event to provide more information, including specific dates and times that volunteers are needed for the committees and/or events you selected. Volunteer opportunities will also be published on this website.

Remember to record your hours in the Volunteer Logbook in the school office. Kennard tracks volunteer hours for reporting to the district. The information may be used for district awards and recognition, or for grant writing and fundraising purposes.
